Starting a Business is Like Buying Your First Motorcycle

As someone who’s starting down the road of business ownership as a total newbie, I'm reminded of the first time I bought a motorcycle.

I'd recently gotten my motorcycle endorsement and was shopping around for a bike. I already had a helmet and leather jacket. I was stoked, but there was also a tiny voice in the back of my mind saying:

“What if you drive into a truck?”

Riding a motorcycle is risky business.

There are certainly safer and equally cool modes of transportation out there (for example). But the rewards of motorcycle ownership outweigh the danger for many people. It’s the same with starting a business.

There are no truly great rewards without risk. Of course, when you start a business, you’re primarily risking time and money, rather than your physical safety (depending on your industry).

The "risk-o-meter" for business ownership changes dramatically, depending on the type of venture. Screen printing T-shirts in your garage to sell on Etsy? Pretty low risk. Opening up a restaurant... Yikes.

Not surprisingly, I’m a lot more comfortable risking time, which is why I’m bootstrapping a freelance marketing and web design company.

If you need help marketing your business, let’s talk. If not, and you enjoy hitting the trails, I’m always up for a ride (motorcycle or MTB). Regardless, I love chatting with fellow entrepreneurs over a coffee.
